Objectified.

About two days ago I watched this awesome documentary called "Objectified." It's basically about the design of things (like toothbrushes, chairs, hand tools, etc.) but it's also so much more than that. It really made me think about my future as a designer and what I want to accomplish as one. Do I want to design something that stands the test of time, or something disposable? Do I want to design to better the human experience? Do I want to design to sell something? To sell myself?

Anyway, "Objectified" is streaming on Netflix right now, and I've been suggesting to people that they watch it. Don't quote me on this but I think it's by the same people who put out "Helvetica," which was a fascinating documentary, too.

Helvetica is about...well, the typeface Helvetica (and it also streams on Netflix). What I love about both "Objectified" and "Helvetica" is that they both really make you look at the world around you. I notice/ponder everyday things that I normally overlook. It makes me more aware of my experience and my world and immediate surroundings. People often live in a dull existence, unconsciously blocking out the constant stimulation we as humans are subject to. However, we can consciously open our minds to really SEE (to perceive with the eyes, discern visibly) versus just LOOKING (to direct one's gaze in a specific direction).

I do a lot of puzzles. Namely crossword puzzles, sudoku, and spelling games. I work out my logical brain a lot, so learning to see has been a really enlightening experience for me. I am excited about the progress of my education.
